Angry Re: Renault Clio II - Electronics - Airbag and Service light illuminated

My reply maybe a bit late but has same issue on my 53 reg Renault clio Expression. Both Service and Airbag lights would illuminate intermittently. By reaching under the front passenger seat and moving the wiring a bit the lights would go out. However this week, the Service and ABS warning lights came on (Not Airbag). I decided to have the system diagnosed by Renault approved garage. End result was they checked and made good the wires under the seat but replaced the right hand drive shaft as it is connected to the ABS.

Re: Renault Clio II - Electronics - Airbag and Service light illuminated

i have this problem on the passenger side. this is the side my son uses to get out from the back. when the air bag light goes on. i always have to jiggle the wire connector and the light goes out. one day i will cable-tie the wires to hold them more securely.

Re: Renault Clio II - Electronics - Airbag and Service light illuminated

Hello all,

I have a 2001 Clio mk2 1.5 dci.

So my Clio's failed its MOT because of the 3 lights not going out (the coils , the airbag and the serv on the dashboard) and I have until Wednesday to fix it (without a code reader to boot as I can't find a code reader that works with my Clio - links to code readers, that read Clip/Renault own codes from 2001 would be really appreciated).

So I think it's the electrics under the seats. I'm the 7th owner and I reckon one of the previous owners did some tinkering under the seats (probably because of a crash, who knows).

So, at the bottom of this post are the photos of the electrics, showing cut and soldered wires . The first 3 pics are below the drivers seat, the 4th & 5th are the passenger seat electrics.

Is this the correct set-up currently (I'm imagining no). If no, does anyone know the correct circuitry and would they explain what I need to do?

I have a soldering iron, choc boxes and patience.

Thank you for any help given.

Driver's Seat Electrics

1. Show's a blue and a brown cut wire in the white box and 2 sets of soldered wires. The orange cable emanates from the chair.

2. A view of the mess under the seat. 3 pairs of soldered wires: Blue-Brown, Brown-Orange, Black-Dark Grey .

3. Showing the Grey and Black soldered wires.

Passenger Seat Electrics

The Black wire goes into the Seat.
Two pairs of soldered wires: Blue-Orange, Brown-Purplish Brown

Re: Renault Clio II - Electronics - Airbag and Service light illuminated

I've got the same issue - MOT has failed for this due to as I understand the new regs on airbag sensor/warning lights.

Looking at the pics above, you've had the clip connector to the seat air bag bypassed with hard wiring - it looks OK to me at first glace.

The issue most people have is the grey block connectors which you still have fitted I see, you should try prising the yellow side clip out with a flat head screwdriver - the connector will then force itself apart.
Put a bit of WD-40 in there and reconnect. Do this for both seats - I did and crossed fingers but no luck.

I've yet to solve my issue, here's what I've done so far (2001 1.2 Dynamique).

1. Cut the wires to the grey block connector and rewired it using terminal blocks (passenger side). Passenger side has only the seat belt tensioner connected via the grey block connector (2 wires either side)

2. Repeated the above for the driver side. Drivers side has the seat belt tensioner, seat belt engaged switch and airbag (I think).

3. WIggled all wires around with the ignition on, disconnected and reconnected all connectors under both seats.

4. Disconnected the ECU for the airbags whicgh is under the ashtray - all of the trim unclips easily. Its just a few screws and bolts. Inspected it, more WD-40 and reconnected.

5. Placed 3.9ohm resistors at each seatbelt tensioner connection point as a load. This means ignition off, disconnecting the blue/brown wires and placing the resistor across these points and switching ignition on. Also placed the resistor across the airbag connecter point

No joy - Serv and airbag light still on.

To do: Check the side impact sensors for the side airbags (these should be under the bottom trim at the pillar points on both sides. I'll try disconnecting/reconnecting and using the resistor as a load again.

So, I'm thinking -
a) wiring fault issue in the loom somewhere, perhaps a broken cable. That'll mean checking each cable end to end with a meter.
b) ECU issue - requires replacement

It's back to the garage tomorrow but I'm thinking it's going to be off the road for a bit.
I'll explain what I've tried to them and ask for a diagnostic.

I'll post back with some info/pics if it gets fixed.

Two Renault cars here: Engine wise they have been great - Electrically they are dogs.

I've had
1. Scenic '05: Keycard Issues, Heater resistor (x2), heater blower, ignition coils , Windows (x3), Air con.

2. Clio: Windows, Heater blower, AIrbag light

Fixed everything myself thanks to this place but so far this airbag has done me.
