DexonXP, THAT'S the problem. Most vehicle manufacture's now incorporate a two catch mechanism (independent to each other)...one being the "safety catch". Renault's being no different.
HOWEVER, this only operates as a safety catch when the catch is engaged. The problem a number of the readers / owners have experienced, is that there is a probability (relatively common it seems) that the safetly catch doesn't engage - and therefore operate. This is ISSUE ONE.
So what about the main catch I hear you ask, because safety should be simply a "secondary" mechanism. Good question. This is ISSUE TWO.
Common for the main catch is also fail in Clio's - so many people / owner's have been doubly unluckly - YES BOTH catches have failed! This is a chance in a million (normally) - but 1000+ (and probably lots more than this globally) reported to BBC Watchdog alone, and many are unreported.
The main catch seems to freeze / not engage properly, due to poor maintenance / poor construction, dirt / grit (including degraded
etc) has been collecting in the bonnet recess for the age of the car - and therefore making the main catch not 'act' as efficiently as it should.
Liability of the maintenance is the responsibility of the manufacture (Renault UK) - only until they have directed the dealerships to maintain since late January 2007 - has the liability moved to the Renault dealerships - but notice still RENAULT'S liability!
Renault have accussed drivers of "not closing the bonnet correctly" - but in all known cases the bonnet has been closed in accordance to the handbook - which basically says "close the bonnet and check". Hmmm...not rocket science!?? They then started accusing drivers of not "maintaining" the catch (starting to see a trend - which "excuse" to indicate to the drivers). But again, they didn't realised that in doing so they are admitting liability - as it was their responsibility!
In short, it's Renault's fault from a deferior part, they are responsibility in designing, manufacturing, maintaining and monitoring the part's condition. They' failed in ALL COUNTS!
Hope this helps summarise what's been going on for the last 14-15months (if not longer) now!
