I just thought I'd add an update to this story.I know a lot of people have contacted VOSA about the problem and have been dissapointed that there has been a refusal to issue a safety recall on all Clio 2's,but VOSA haven't been completely ignoring the people that contacted them.

On the computer system that is used for MOT's now there is a section called the VSI which is the Vehicle Specific Information. This has a section that flags any possible issues with the car we are about to test and any things to pay special attention to.Up until now the section hasn't been used, but the Renault Clio 2 has the dubious pleasure of being the first model to be 'flagged',and it's for possible problems with the bonnet catches 'due to poor maintenance'.

The information is printed on the check sheet that is used when carrying out an MOT,and although I forget the exact wording,it brings the problem to the testers awareness.

I know this may sound like 'too little too late',but at least it advertises the fact that there concerns with the catches.I must admit,if it wasn't for me being a member of this forum I wouldn't have known about any problem with them,so this is at least alerting people in the trade and then this can be reported to the owner of the car.

I know it's not a recall, but at least VOSA are listening.

In exchange for my precious time - I got a replacement (aluminium? ) catch - just the upper part- That involved undoing 2 screws and re-screwing the catch on- Wow - so time consuming!-
I assume the new 'secondary safety catch' is not as prone to rusting up BUT- there remains the problem of the 'lower' catch housed in the bodywork of the bonnet bay- This is what gets rusted up and clogged with debris from the front grille- You still need to keep an eye on this and make sure it is free and well greased-
So I'm not sure if I owe Renault much thanks or not?
Hi Faz,the guy who fitted my catch put the lower one on as well,(would check but the fecking bonnet release has failed to function )maybe mine had more rust on it,I would suggest,if it has any rust on it,go jump on em,Alan

I am actually quite pleased that our perservance and "being on the case" of Renault and VOSA is starting to create the risk-avoidance procedures that we have been pushing for for over 2 years!

Well done Renault and VOSA for seeing sence, and replacing the "part" with a less inferiour part! But rather you just owe up once and for all that you got it wrong. I admire people who admit their mistakes rather than those who think the problems goes away!

P.S. They (Renault HQ) still don't seem to respond to my mails - ho-well!

Renault Clio bonnet catch design fault

I was driving my Renault Clio down the motorway yesterday when the bonnet flew open and smashed into my windscreen. I was lucky I wasn't killed. I want to know if it has happened to anyone else and if so, what they have done about it. This shouldn't have happened and I know I closed the bonnet correctly last time I opened it. I am considering taking legal action and contacting 'watch dog'.

Where have you been vmanning, this has been flagged on watchdog so many times, also on this and other forums...I don't think that you will have any luck with legala action as there are many many others who have had this happen to them. Do a search and have a look at the ongoing threads on this subject
