Question Renault Clio II - Engine - Idle problems

Hi

Renault Clio Dynamique 1.2 16v 03 plate.

I'm also having problems with my Clio and rough idling. When I start the car the revs sort of "adjust" up and down until they sit at about 1100, and after I've driven for a couple of mins it dips to about 500 revs and starts juddering like a mo-fo. To help I'll give you the history since I had the car.

When I first got the car last August it seemed to be running fine. Then one day the Toxic Fume light came on, the car lost power (wouldn't go above 25mph) and was idling poorly. It was still under warranty, so I took it back. They changed the spark leads & plugs. It ran great for about 2 weeks and then the idling came back, and the light came on again. So I took it back. This time they said it was the Low Oxygen sensor. The idling problem was still there and by this point I'd heard it was common so I STUPIDLY left it. Recently the TFWL came on again. I took it to another garage who said it was again the Low Oxygen Sensor, so it was replaced. The idling was still a problem so I went looking to see what I could do about it myself, as when I spoke to the mechanic about it he dismissed what I was telling him, what with me being female.

I got my mate round to have a go at disconnecting and cleaning the Top Dead Centre sensor, which we did. It improved slightly (it now doesn't dip below 500 revs) but the judder is still there.

I've read that I should take out the ICV and give it a good clean with carb cleaner, however I don't know how big a job this is. I've read that it's attached to the throttle body , does the whole throttle body need to come out? Also is it an easy job for an amature armed with the Haynes manual, or is it better to take it to a garage? Do I need any specialised equipment? Where about on the engine will I find the throttle body ? Is there any pics on the forum that will show me where it is located?

Sorry if I sound like an idiotic woman, but if it's not a hard job then I'd rather save my money and ask my mate to do it. I want to sell it, and don't want this obvious judder to be a problem.

Sounds like a faulty throttle motorised throttle body ..
but could also be caused by one or more defective spark plugs, this is a very common problem and would be the first thing that a dealer would replace to cure this type of running problem..

If it turns out to be the body then it is bolted inside the inlet manifold and will take about 1 hour to remove..

Generally the body is not repairable, so a new one will be required..

This is also a very common problem with the D7F engine and there are a couple of Renault tech notes that cover it in detail..

The car is in for an MOT today, so all going well it won't affect it.

My mate's boyfriend is a mechanic (works mostly on vans) so I'm going to ask if he fancies doing it for me - sounds far to complicated, and I don't want to make matters worse.

Any idea on what a new Throttle body will cost? Does it come with a new ICV or will I just get the old one cleaned up?

The first time I had problems with the car they changed the spark plugs & leads, but it was only good for about 2 weeks. Surely they should last longer than that?
