Basically what happens is that I am driving along and all of a sudden my clio (03 Clio Expression 1.2 16v) dramatically loses power and acceleration. When this happens the electronic fault warning light comes on on my dashboard. (The one with a jagged line and a 'squiggle' beneath it!)Because my maximum speed drops to about 30 mph I have to limp to a layby or the next set of traffic lights and turn the car off and on again. This always seems to clear the problem... until the next time it occurs.

I took it to a garage who hooked my car up to a system which is (supposedly) able to diagnose the fault. They said that it was a problem either with the throttle potentiometer or another little switch. So I spent 120 quid having this diagnosis done and these two components changed. Guess what? It still happens!

I have had the car for a year, it has 63k miles on the clock and this fault has been occurring intemittently for about 4 months. Unfortunately it has been happening more and more recently such that it happens pretty much every journey I make now.

Its bloody annoying and actually pretty dangerous as it seems to happen without warning. Any advice gratefully received!

PS My car is blue if that makes a difference.
would suggest getting a copy of the codes faults such as limp mode can be attributable to many things

Hi 16V Vanessa,

I've got a 2001 Clio II and I've had the same thing happen to me.

I got it checked out by a friend's garage who ran a diagnostic check. Their conclusion was to replace a sensor in a unit above the manifold. Four months have gone by and I've never had the problem arise again!

I hope this works for you!

Hi, i had exactly the same problem and my car is the same 1.2 16V Expression. There is a little casing at the back of the engine bay with all the wires underneath. remove this cover and tape all the wires to make water proof. Car hasn't done it for 4 months now. the cover was cutting into the wires. hope this helps

Good grief!!!!

59 pages over 6 years...... that's two hours I won't get back.......

BUT lots of ideas thanks - sifting through the mire of pain and anguish - I need to check (in order of likelihood, - I've checked the gas pedal sender)

- ECU top box/chaffing/connections
- All the loom connectors in the engine bay
- fuse box relay connections
- throttle body
- TDC sensor / MAP / MAP (might move these up the list as cheap and easy....)

Just idling on tickover as it stands with engine light off, sometimes engine light on and 50% throttle response - but then the tickover speeds/steadies, light off and no throttle response at all again.

What a ridiculous situation. Will let you know what (if anything) works. Luckily not needed every day, but son really would like the driving lessons it was bought for!!!!

Cheers, A

Re: Renault Clio 2003 - Engines - Loss of power and Warning Light

Anyone got a picture of what this ECU / top box / cover looks like?

Just FYI, from my own experience and others (on other cars not just Renault) bad wiring or dodgy connectors is a 'favourite' culprit, as somebody once wrote elsewhere "modern cars are computers on wheels" so it doesn't take much to raise a problem.

I agree MAF is another good contender, my previous Ford had this hassle but it took me absolutely AGES to finally work out what was really going on; the symptoms manifested as auto-box failing, specifically overdrive clutch slipping, it would keep hunting between 3rd & 4th then it would finally throw in the towel and flash the MIL light.

You start asking around where to get a good 2nd hand or recon box from, then you read more about what false symptoms the MAF can throw up. So I got a new MAF for 45, sorted. Was like getting a brand new gearbox.

It seems to me these type of MAF 's would have a working life of maybe 10 years, then they just stop working properly, giving the ECU nonsense information which does not match with readings from other sensors. The computer can only work with the data it's given so throws what it thinks is the appropriate error code. Note that the MAF sensor is not failed, just giving the wrong Voltage. So as far as the computer is concerned, MAF is working OK. Must be something else.

The acid test (I subsequently discovered) was to unplug the MAF sensor, which forces open-loop fuelling. This does not use MAF data; if car then drives perfectly, there's your problem right there. Don't know how this exactly equates with Renaults however but worth investigating.
