Sometimes I just gave up, other times when, after repeatedly trying it did start it made a crackling noise. I took it to a proper dealer whom I cannot name and they did nothing to help. In the end I took it to a specialist French car mechanic who found out that the crankshaft was not in line properly. He put it right, and it now runs as sweet as a bird and starts every time. In fact, everything feels better and smoother. Fortunately this only cost 150 but he is a friend so I expect it was a cheaper rate. I know nothing about cars, but I hope maybe this helps.
PS I am running a T reg Clio.

The Crankshaft was not in line properly?

This would entail fitting a new engine, it could not be repaired.

150 is very cheap for a new engine!

It is more likely that a new crankshaft sensor was fitted, if so this is a half hour job maximum and the sensor costs around 18.00, I would ask your "friend"? what he actually did which cost you 150.00.

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !
Currently in davesss's garage:
2002 Laguna Sports Tourer 1.8 Dynamique Moondust VF1KGOB, Fiat Siecento Micheal Schumaker, Kawasaki KLE M/Cycle and a cheap Mountain Bike.
