Renault Clio 1.4 8v - Info on starting problems - HELPFUL!

Thought I'd pass this on as it will probably happen to some of you due to the problem....

I'll continue.

After coming back from a 2 week holiday the engine would turn over but not fire up.
AA called and after 'wiggling' the plug that goes into the coil it started. He wrapped it in tape as a temporary measure and I called my trusty independent Renault mecahnic to sort a new plug for me. He gives me the bad news that it's part of the loom and I'd have to source one from a breakers and he'd fit it. He pops over anyway (good bloke) and pulls the plug apart to find the three wires a bit loose so crimps them tight and HEY PRESTO the car starts fine!
I drive to work a few hours later, everything fine.
Finish in the morning, get in the car and it won't fire up, just turns over and over!
AA called and he plugs in the laptop, problem is a dead crank sensor. Get towed home.
Buy sensor next day, mechanic fits it with new gearbox oil as well (second gear was getting stiff, now all sorted). He still has to 'wiggle' the plug to get it started though.....

Next morning, yep, same problem. AA called again and after 20 minutes of fault finding get towed to a French car specialist in Orpington, Kent.

They called me Monday to say it's all fixed, here comes the science.
It was two wires in the loom between the troublesome plug that ran underneath the airbox, they had almost broken causing the starting problem to be so erratic.
Three hours labour and a bit to the taxman comes in at £188 - I dread to think what a Renault dealer would charge, even if they found the problem!

According to the garage owner, the loom is in a great place to catch moisture and general abuse so it was just a matter of time. Oh joy, well done Renault.

Hope this can be of help to anyone else!

1.6 clio 8v trouble starting

hi, im a new member here, just wanted to know if someone could help me. My car seems to have similar problems to yours, one minute it will start fine, then next it wont start and sometimes can take 15mins to get her to fire. Just sits there with the engine cranking not firing. Someone said it could be the CTS (coolant temp sensor) or the TDC sensor..

any ideas guys?

im at a loss and cant really afford to take it to the dealer.

Hi and welcome, try the TDC first, you can clean it yourself and there are some photos on the forum if you search for TDC problems. There is a FAQ section also under the articles tab.
