Renault Clio 1 - No Brakes!*FIXED*

Had a strange experience today when returning home from a short trip of around 20miles.

Approaching a roundabout I touched m,y brakes to start slowing down and my pedal went down to the floor. Pumped it a couple of times and was only doing around 15mph as I glided gracefully into an empty roundabout.
Exiting and with less than mile to reach home, I drove very slowly - annoying all the holiday makers and used the handbrake to slow and stop.
I kept tentatively dabbing at the foot brake but still very pumpable. About three hundred yards from home I had to brake for an idiot 'L' on moped and automatically hit the footbrake; lo and behold the darned thing is working normally.
I checked under the bonnet only to see what my brake fluid res was like and it's OK. Nipping down to the garage on Tuesday to see the lads and get it sorted.
Anyone else been subjected to the same phenomenon?

Sounds like a master cylinder problem.I've had this a number of times in the past with many makes and models of cars and it's always been the cylinder causing it.The seals harden and allow fluid to pass them intermittantly.

Just out of interest, have you had any work done on the brakes recently. It can happen after you have had the pads changed.

Brakes

Hello Pat.w & Lagdti - thanks for replies.
In answer to your questions I have had no reason to brake hard today (odd that, with holiday makers around) and I had thought it might have been slave cyl. By 'eck Lagdti I hope it aint the Master.
It's only a week since I had my brakes checked out and the system bled and no other problem was found.
As I stated I'll take the old girl back in on Tuesday and get the lads to sort it for me.

Incidentally I live in Plymouth though I'm not from this part of the world. I digress, if anyone is in this town and have a problem with their car, providing it's not a major mechanical problem, take the car to The Challenger Tyre Centre' - it's a family business and they've been there for years.
They do far, far more than tyre jobs; their work is good and their prices are genuinely low.

Brakes

My apologies for the delay in getting back to you - unavoidable I'm afraid.

Just a courtesy mail to let you know that it was the master cyl. plus two new slaves for rear. New parts and labour came to £200 which I thought was reasonable knowing Renault prices.

Comforting feeling knowing your brakes work........

My gf has a mk1 clio, when the engine is off.. the brake pedal is as it should be, firm with pressure behind it. But when the engine is started and you apply pressure to the brake pedal, you get an "air release" kind of noise and there isnt any pressure behind it. Pads, Fluid level are both fine.. just wondering what it could be if anyone knows?
