Smile Renault Clio 2 - 1.2 Power Loss*FIXED*

I'm hoping what I have described here may help somebody else!
2002 Clio 1.2 petrol, apx 50k miles. Developed power loss over a period of weeks and reached the point where it became impossible to start. Diagnostic gear failed to identify the fault (there's a surprise!). All the obvious points were checked but to no avail. However with a view to checking the MAP sensor I tested the vacuum reading and found it was zero - no vacuum at all at cranking speed! Removal of the inlet manifold (fiddly) found no fault. As a last resort, I dropped the exhaust pipe and the engine roared (literally) into life. Further investigation revealed that the cat was totally blocked! As a temporary measure I removed the front pipe and smashed the cat internals to pieces. The car is now running perfectly. I won't be ordering a new cat from Renault as the car owner is strapped for cash. Yes non-genuine ones are not so good but it will be OK for a year or two by which time the car will have been disposed of!
Does any of this sound familiar? Could apply to any car, not just a Renault.

Re: Renault Clio 2 - 1.2 Power Loss*FIXED*

I recently got involved with a Clio 2 1.2 that had an apparent Lambda sensor fault,we had a second hand cat with the sensors in it laying around so I swapped the whole cat/sensor assembly over and all was well.On closer inspection the cat I took off was completely empty!.Maybe this a common problem with this particular model.

Anyone else had complete cat failure on a Clio 2 1.2 16 valve?.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Re: Renault Clio 2 - 1.2 Power Loss*FIXED*

Hi, Ive just read you're post and I think I might have the same problem ~ but want to ask if I should try some other tests before getting expensive ;-(

I am a bit of a mechanic dunce , the car is a clio expression 16v 2003. In the last 3 weeks ( it started when it was really wet) the car started losing power, like the spark plugs or something weren't working right. Since then the car has been periodically under powered and on one occasion has stalled.

Does this sound like the same problem you had?

Cheers for any advice !

I read your article and looked at other ways of cleaning the CATALYTIC CONVERTER I used CATACLEAN (catalytic converter cleaner) (AMAZON 13/14) it worked just as well as removing the guts of the converter as you did, without having to fork out for a new converter,
with the bonus my clio runs better sounds better and does not cut out!
