If the adjusters look like this and my drawing makes sense-
Pivot the lower section in the direction of arrow 1 until it's teeth release from the upper section.
This should allow the upper section to move towards the lining material, (arrow 2).
That allows this shoe to move towards the other.
Centralise the shoes again and refit drum.
Pressing the brake pedal will readjust the ratchet if it's all working correctly.
You might hear the ratchet clicking as it moves.
They sometimes put holes in the backplate to allow a screwdriver access to the adjuster to knock it off to allow easier drum removal.
Knowing what to poke is the key to this.
If you do move the lower pivoting section, make sure it moves freely and moves back under it's own spring tension.
There are many types of adjusters but this is a popular version if it doesn't have a thumbwheel on a bar type setup.
Other than that, I'm not sure what setup you have.
If you are not sure, don't risk it, call in a mechanic to take a look.
