I know some people will probably disagree with me but I always use the wedge/fork type splitter.

This will destroy the rubber gaiter around the joint but if it is to be replaced does that really matter.

They don't usually require too much effort to split them.

Undo the nut completely then replace it loosely on the spindle and give it a swift tap with a hammer. If it falls out, which they sometimes do you won't even need a splitter.

Don't loosen the nut and try to tap it as if it will loosens the joint you won't be able to remove the nut due to the whole thing turning. Take it fully off while the joint is tight then replace it hand tight.
Currently in planmeca's garage:
Renault Laguna 1.8 16v x 2 and a lot of other things. could really do with a tidy up to be honest I'll do it tomorrow
