Yes you are spot on. remove the nut completely then screw it on a couple of turns by hand
The nut is a locking type (nylock) so if you just loosen it a bit it will still be tight on the spindle. If you then tap the end and it loosens the spindle the whole thing will turn and you will have difficulty holding the spindle while trying to removing the nut due to the tightness of the nut.
When you start it will become obvious what I mean.
