One side at a time is fine. You need to spin it as fast as you can. It should be vitually silent, though you can sometimes hear a slight rub from the brake shoes. If theres a bearing gone/going you'll def hear a difference. If not you could always throw a tenner in the direction of a tyre shop and get the to jack up and listen. For a reasonable quality bearing to be fitted, you're prob talking 50 to 60 plus vat.
