Thanks to all those who took time to read my post but unfortunately nobody could assist. For the benefit of others here's the feed back. Yes it is a difficult task! Very awkward and time consuming rather than technically difficult. It is possible to remove the servo without pulling the interior apart as it can be accessed from underneath once the underbody guard is removed. Parts are expensive but there is a good secondhand market which saved 90% of the parts cost. Had the servo (s/h), pump (s/h) and master cylinder (new) replaced. 8 hours labour charged which was light. My mechanic refuses to do another! Good luck if you find yourself in the same position. It could well be the last straw on an older car unless you're good with a spanner.
