Well, I can see why you'd be sceptical - I remember reading about the first-generation Audi TT convertible, which had a miniscule spacesaver. Which when fitted, couldn't accomodate the full-sized wheel, in the wheel well.

What are the differences in width between the spare and the main tyres on the car?

I agree, someone will have done this - renaults are no more immune to punctures than any other car, but if its a couple of centimetres, then it should fit.
