pick the same point on both sides of the tyres, get someone to hold one end on and chuck the tape measure across to the other side of the car to the same point on that tyre(inner or center slot running round the tyre is ok.) measure from front side and rear side(as high up as you can measure before hitting the bottom or the car) of tyre.
1/3 rotation of the inner arm is about 1mm or so i think?

there is a thread on here and there are many youtube videos showing how to do it.

i did mine that way and got the tracking almost perfect before i took it to a full 4 wheel computer alignment setup at the local tyre place just round the corner from me. they were impressed that i had got it so close to spot on parallel. the only bit i couldnt track up was front to back or compensate for thrust angle(yaw) of rear axle. but you can get it perfect, it just means taking it for a drive (on a straight bit of road)between adjustments to correct off line steering wheel.
