Guide to replacing the airbag slip-ring (AKA clockspring AKA squib)

This is a simple job, and solves the Airbag and SERV lights problem where the 'driver's airbag open circuit' error is indicated. You'll need a T10 and T20 torxs screwdriver, plus a T50 socket bit and a large flat-blade screwdriver. Also some silicone lubricant if you're fitting a second-hand replacement.

1 - disconnect the battery for 10 mins to allow it to drain.

2 - Release the steering wheel airbag by using the large flat-blade screwdriver to lever off the retaining clips from the back of the steering wheel. You can turn the wheel 90 degrees left and right to get to the hole from underneath.

3 - pull out the airbag and disconnect it by pulling up the centre locking mechanism and the pulling out the plugs. Now disconnect the horn by levering out the connector from the body of the steering wheel.

4 - Center the steering wheel and lock it using the steering lock.

5 - Remove the retaining bolt using the T50 socket bit. If you want, you can mark the bolt's position, so you know how tight to do it back up. Leave it on a little bit so that when you yank off the wheel from the hub, you don't whack yourself in the face with it! Then remove completely, feeding the connecting wires carefully through the hole.

6 - Remove the top half of the steering column surround by simply lifting it upwards.

7 - Remove the radio remote control stalk by pushing a screwdriver into the retaining clip from above. Look at the new slip ring assembly and you'll see where this clips into and be able to work out how you release it from the old one. Don't be tempted to disassemble the stalk by undoing the torx screws on it as it will just fall apart in your hands!

8 - Now remove the lower half of the steering column surround by removing the the three torx screws underneath.

9 - Now you can see the whole slip ring assembly. Disconnect all the wires from the back, then remove the control stalks which are each held in by two torx screws.

10 - The old slip ring assembly is held on by a single torx under the steering column. Remove this and off it comes.

11 - Look at the new slip ring. In the back, there's a small window through which you can see the coil of cable (hence the term 'clock spring'). If you got this from a breakers, this should be lubricated, so put a few drops of silicone lubricant in (turning it as you do so).

12 - Now (and this is important), look at the gear cog on the bottom right front. This shows a '0' position and limits the rotation from that point to three complete turns in either direction. With the steering wheels set straight ahead, the slip ring must be installed in the '0' position. Play about with the old one to make sure you understand how it works, then install the new one correctly.

13 - Now just reassemble everything in the reverse order of the above. The ABS light should not come on and shouldn't need a reset.

14 - Job done. Should only take you 30 minutes
