There is no point in disconnecting the cables if the arms on the calipers are on there stops,even if you take the cables off the arms won't come back any further.

The pistons don't turn at all when the handbrake/foot brake is applied,there is an internal mechanism that self adjusts as the handbrake is applied.The foot brake works off hydraulic pressure only.

It sounds as though this caliper was faulty before you changed the pads (were they evenly worn across both sides?) and this is what has thrown up the cause of the problem.If the electronic mechanism pulls the cable on as far as it can go I suspect it will throw a fault,hence the warning light.
