This will be because when the engine is off the slave cylinder is not operating a vaccum. This will make the pedal hard as you pump it....when the engine is switched on the slave cylinder is working creating a vaccum and if there is air in the system or the master cylinder is faulty it will cause the pedal to travel and the brakes feel spongy
