I thought the sat-nav still worked even with the stereo turned off, but I could be wrong. I reckon the only way to find out for sure is to remove the current head unit (make sure you have the radio code) and see if you can still get the sat-nav to talk to you.

From the display point of view, I always found that the radio/CD display on the Carminat screen was a pain in the backside, with the stereo, tyre pressure/door open display and the sat-nav all fighting to use the screen, and none of them really winning. If the new stereo has its own separate display and doesn't use the main sat-nav LCD, I'd consider that a bonus
