Renault Megane Engine overheating

Its a 1996 1.6RN Megane and this afternoon the engine got really hot and the temperature light came on after just 5 minutes of driving through town. I had previously driven to work for 20miles along the motorway with no problems (that I noticed) this morning.

I've had a look and the fan is not coming on at all.

I'm sure its either because the fans broken, the thermostat is broken or the cooling fluid isn't being pumped around and therefore the radiator never gets hot. I'm hoping its the thermostat!

Am I right in saying that the thermostat is positioned at the bottom of the radiator? Can I take the connector off and link the pins together to see if the fan works ok?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
