Hi coup, thanks for the reply.

It failed on the disc, among other things (nearly all corrosion related )

How strict the MOT here is depends purely on the examiner. The place I went there appears to be very strict and at one point there were three mechanics all discussing the rusted brake line (see the other thread I made in this forum).

I can only assume it's not that bad if he said you can sand it off, but at the same time it was bad enough to fail (these people are quite strict and put nearly everything down as a fail). I have never heard of this before, which is why I am asking.

And you make a good point and it's something I also thought - you can't do it by hand because the sanding wouldn't be even around the surface of the disc.
