Laguna I gearbox fault?

Managed to track down the source of an odd ratling noise. Was hoping it was the exhaust but turns out to be more interesting that that...

If I hold a drive shaft on the inboard end I can waggle it around in its socked hence the knocking noise. How serious is this? I am thinking along the lines of gearbox bearings. Does this mean impending doom or could it be OK for a couple of years?

Its a 1.8 8v petrol by the way with 142k miles on the clock Engine is running fine so seems a pity if the gearbox is on the way out.

Any help appreciated!!
