There are a few of them:
Ill list them then detail, feel free to give up halfway thru or sooner
Not in order of importance.
At the time ,early 2011 the govt here were doing a scrappage deal of 1500 (euro).
I think something similar was running in the UK not too long ago.
Renault were running "double scrappage deal"and other incentives.
To cut it short My car ( A meg III exp 1.5 dci, body type wouldnt have mattered) cost me the equivalent of £13500+ adding on an open market value of about £700for the car I had would have been the equivalent of buying a brand new Meg III of the above type for £14200 cash deal in off the street in the UK.
Remembering the vagaries of country pricing, and cars are generally more expensive here,it seemed reasonable at the time.
At the time ,Id started doing work related long journeys, they have since eased off.
In running cost terms ,at present Im not saving much over a petrol equivalent, but a quick glance at autotrader and you will see that for normal makes at least diesels predominate and for residual value ,its no contest.
I built my own some 12 years ago.I was constrained in the size to 10% of the original house volume to avoid planning permission and architect fees.
I also went "wide" for both a wider than normal door width and to give at least 3 feet "car clearance" on both sides for storage/appliances etc.
Ive had narrow width and length garages in the past and theyre a real pain.
I constructed the garage with the newish car I had at the time in mind..
ie car length 3.9m +60 cm for clearance on length.
To cut it short again. A meg 3,is 4.3 m and that was about my limit.
2nd hand UK imports that I was interested in wouldnt fit..a porsche maybe
a.I wouldnt have gone for any other renault except a Meg III coupe, maybe a faster clio diesel but I knew then that a newer shape wasnt far off.
Lag 3..I could have adjusted the garage a bit if the price/looks/performance was close.
Lag 3 coupe the new price differential here to UK(when they were available) is so ludicrous that it wasnt worth considering..even a 2008/2009 import.
Other new cars in consideration were vw polo, not golf! diesel for a little more cash, but even tho I think the newer polos are at least as decent looking as a golf , the 3 cyl engine just turned me off.
a) New cars:Here in Eire on the Meg 3 there are only 2 diesel variations ,even now in 2013.
The 1,5 dci 90bhp and the 1.5 dci 110bhp.
Price difference at the time was about £1300 ,in performance terms a £35 tuning box at nominal settings gives/exceeds the 110 bhp performance in my experience.
New...the vw polo 3 cyl want going to cut it.
The 2nd hand UK option of something like a 407 D coupe(preffered the 406 one),Peugeot 600..alfa and so on.
They just wouldnt fit in the garage for one thing!
What abpout vw golfs, audi a3's (a4's and above wouldnt fit either)
Everybody here is "doing them" golf's ,a3's a4's n a5's too..They just dont look that good or different.
The only non boring/performance cars Ive seen are petrol.
I could do auto np,seems ideal for a diesel if well sorted.
Laguna coupe 3.0dci isnt available in anything else.
Meg 3 .. they had a paddle 1.9 auto diesel.. now gone
Now there is some newish cvt non paddle transmission available.I dont know..on a 1.5D it just doesnt work for me.
Ive np going for a 3-5 year old car that has a fsh etc dependent on mileage.
Hi mileage here is worse than the UK, cos there a lot of it is on decent roads.
The 3 year.. or up to 5 years we will cover some costs guarantee,is security. If you are varying the original spec its less so.
Still it is a big consideration on purchase.
Thas all I can think of right now.
