The car is 13 years old and is starting to develop a general rust problem.

I have a theory about this. It's probably not only due to the ridiculous amount of salt on the roads in winter here.

The previous owner (who owned the car for several years) used to drive to Croatia quite often on holiday because his parents live there. I think his parents may have lived near the coast and that the car spent a great deal of time parked near the sea (Croatia has many nice beaches ), which might have accelerated the corrosion.
