It does sound like you had a frozen blockage in the fill pipe. Although you are using a premium brand fuel and presumably winter grade diesel could you have picked up water in the fuel at some point from a poor storage tank, instead of the diesel formaing wax with low temperature?
It seems your vehicle is ok now so hopefully no more worries unless the temperatures stay low again.
