The offset isn't far out to be honest,I have the Clio 2 down as 35-38 so I can't see your 40's making a huge difference.You could try some 2-5mm spacers but I doubt it will make much difference.

What width are the tyres and what make tyres are fitted?.Have you had the wheel alignment checked at all?.What tyre pressures are you running?.

The wider wheels will accentuate any wear in the steering/suspension,it would be an idea to check the steering column and universal joint at the base of it and also the wishbone bushes.The wheels will also 'tramline' quite noticeably,this is inherent with wider wheels although certain types of tyre and tread will make it worse/better.
