I don't know anything about electronic hand brakes but it is possible that the cable is sticking by what you've said about the calipers and you said that the handbrake motor rewound for a lot longer than usual when you got to the garage which sounds to me like the cable has freed allowing the motor to do it's job unless the link to the cable from the motor has broken leaving the motor free to rewind but without seeing it then i can only guess ..
