Can't be 100% sure on this and I am sure someone with more knowledge on the automatic handbrake will comment soon but does it not knacker the system up applying the handbrake with the cables disconnected from the calipers.
Currently in daverobzippy's garage:
2007 grand scenic 1.5 dci, 2007 renault traffic 115 dci, 1979 vandenplas 1500
