Unhappy Clio 182 Temperature gauge problem

I have a after market performance air filter attached to my 2.0l engine. It was fine to start with however the temperature gauge started to fluctuate, going up and down irratically one month ago.

Today the needle went to the bottom and the revs stuck at 2000rpm and the engine started choking with no power. There was also some black smoke coming from the exhaust.

Can anyone tell me if the air filter is the cause of the intermittant temperature sensor failure and causing the fuel mixture to be rich?
When the engine gets to a certain temperature, I switch the engine off and try to turn the engine over again, but it is not having any of it and wont start.

Much appreciated.

p.s. I'm taking the car back to the manufacturers to look at soon. I'm afraid they will try and blame it on the aftermarket filter.
