Hi everbody. Can anybody help me here please. I 've had my espace about two years now its been laid up for about eighteen months or so , all locks and infra red system worked fine before lay up.

Now i cant lock it using the keys or the infra red system for some reason, I 've stripped out all doors checked for broken or cracked wires repaired the cracked one that i found. the only small problem that i know of and i dont know if this could be the cause is when the key is in the driver door lock barrel and is turned towards the rear of vehicle to try and lock it you can here the lock trying to lock but they dont actually lock and the barrel turns very very slightly at the same time.

When your sat inside th evehicle and press the internal locking switch all doors lock and unlock.

Whilst the espace was laid up the battery was flat for a long time it was taken out recharged and left out till now could this have affected the infra red system at all.

The passengers door lock barrel will not turn at all in any direction is this supposed to be like this or is it just seised up solid, i've drowned it in penitrating oil (still solid) even thought of some gentle heat on it till i noticed part of the lock is nylon, any thought on this would be very much appreciated. king regards martin

Hi Key plip light up ok when pressed so i can only assume its sending a signal , but no I have'nt replaced the batteries as yet i suppose it wont do no harm to change them , is there ant way to check to see if it is sending a signal ? kind regards MARTIN

for all the key batterys will cost you id replace them as my batterys are running flat.. the led still lights up but the range of the infra red has reduced as i now need to go right up to the window for it to work which defeats the purpose, also this should turn the immobilizer on and off so if your locks are duff you could get stuck:d

Don't know if this helps or hinders. My espace is the next one after yours, keyhole in the ' french drivers' [left-side] door only. It has an infra-red key and yes the red winkie flashes when I press. The key will unlock the passenger door. Just tried for the first time ever. Thacham alarm is much louder than expected when you open the door. But the zapper shut it up after the door was closed.

I was told by a guy who checked out the alarm system for me when I bought it a year ago, that these keys have 'memories' of the car they serve, which can fade away after some weeks if not used on the car. He was warning me not to store the 'spare' away, but use it and regularly I gave it to the trouble and showed her how to drive a real car.

He also told me that the memory can be returned to the key quite simply. Unfortunately I don't remember the advice, except that it involved the OTHER key. But I do have his mobile number

Could it be this? I know I would see an alarm specialist based non what I said above?

shaun here goes for the second time

WHY DOES THIS FORUM KEEP SAYING I'M NOT SIGN IN WHEN I GO TO POST A NEW POST?? when i am signed in

Any way here goes

shaun thanks for the info about being able to lock passenger door with a key . any chance you can chat to this guy and find out that info on the memory for the keys for the cars that it serves. Is there any numbers anywhere to verify that the sensor and key hasnt come from a differnt vehicle if it has would that cause any problem if memory was lost from the key, would he know about that sort of thing . hmm some interesting thought there shaun look forwards to your reply kind regards MARTIN

The site sign-in first. Always check in the top right corner of the home page to check your "signed-in" status before anything else. If it says Welcome you last signed on da da da you are recognised by the system. Else the legend is "Sign In and enter your password" Presume the organisers have filters to keep the whole site clean.

Some computers have programmes to clear unnecessary clutter before during or after sessions on line. "Window Wiper" is an example, but Norton and McAfee etc. may also do this and they could be signing you off automatically. These facilities can be programmed so they will always recognise your presence by installing a cookie!

As regards phoning-a-friend about the key matching, suggest YOU find a Thatcham recognised security person where YOU are and just ask innocent questions with a view to showing them the car if necessary. It's good networking and if they are helpful you now have someone to help when needed. I am told Thatcham appointed technicians tend to be honest and competent. Come back if you need more

Martin you asked earlier in the thread how to check if the plip is emitting a signal.

If you use a digital camera or mobile phone camera and press the button whilst looking through camera you should see a bright light emitting from the plip.

I had a 95 Lag 1 Estate, and I'm not sure if its the same system but my plip just stopped working one day and because it was diesel i could not get the immobiliser off.I searched the net for hours trying to resolve but ended up towing the car to Renault and paying the £35 to have the plip reprogrammed. If you take your logbook and some id to your dealer they should be able to give you the code for the immobiliser if you dont have it,I think they charge about £15 for this

I have a newer shape Espace now(same as Shaun Wall) and the key only locks and unlocks the passenger door(which is stupid as its meant to be central locking) as thats the only one with a lock. But its a different system to my old Lag as it has the transponder in the key which is read by the aerial thing behind the ignition cowling.

When your car was on the road did you have to use the plip to lock and unlock after the car had sat without the ignition on for a couple of mins? If so this is the same as the Lag 1's

I have never had any trouble with immobilisers i can start the vehicle no problem .

If i lock the espace from inside i can unlock all locks from the drivers door but cannot lock it from that door , I seem to have to always lock it using the plip ( allways thought i had a problem with that door )( may be not ) are you saying it cannot be locked from the driver door the unlock vacility on that door is only there to use if the plip should fail for any reason .? I f thats so then my problem could be th eroof sensor because of the long layup perhapes its lost it memory any thoughts would be appreciated kind regards Martin

It does sound as if its lost its memory.I dont know if the lock facility is there or not but it sounds like not(which is stupid)As I said mine will only lock/unlock the passenger door manually but thats the only door with a lock in it.The only thing I've read about the roof sensors is that if any water gets in from the aerial mount it can cause problems

Not sure if I've helped or just confused you more

Zinx may have answered the Q you asked me but anyway the answer is there is no keyhole on the right door [drivers door in UK]. The only keyhole is on the passenger door, cause in France that is the driver's door. The key will unlock the passenger door on my car and when the door is opened the alarm goes off.

I don't think it unlocks the other doors, but I don't actually know 'cause the racket made by the alarm made me close up everything really fast and use the zapper to stop the effin noise. (It was 10pm)

Hi shaun & zinx

I think both of you drive the MK3 models where as mine is a mk2 1994 and there is a drivers key hole in the drivers door on mine and other that i have seen this morning locally and on e bay.

Mine which will only unlock ( well at least mine that is only unlocks) this is what i'm trying to find out is it meant to lock as well with the key, or is it there only to unlock in case your remote stops working for some reason whilst th evehicle may be locked , as i have already said the passengers key hole lock will not turn in any direction . if the remote stops working again how can i lock it till the remote is fixed. kind regards MARTIN

Your locking problem

Martin
Have you got Haynes Espace manual?
Section 12, diagram 39 deals with central locking
for HAYNES PHASE3 Espaces (91-97).
Shaun
PS I use Haynes phase3 intentionally cause I think Renault calls yours a Mk2 and ours Mk3 (Mk3 is not covered by the Haynes manual and is almost useless to us but is ok for you

Hi Shaun

Yes my maual cover 1985 - 1996 and in sectin 12 only cover to no 22 shame but there you go but thank very much for the info guress i 'll have to update my manual.

I did manage to win on e bay last night another plip and sensor so at least i'lll be able to lock it with the central locking anyway and sort the other lock out after that sorted at least i'll have some security on the vehicle when its parked in town. How in depth doe's yoour maual go into central locking? kind regards .

Hi shaun sorry misunderstood what you said in you last post, yes section 12 (diagram) 39 i've been working from that diagram all last week stripping it out all over the place and got no where .

It clearly shows 4 and 5 the key switches as haynes call them ,me and you, (lock barrels) that can make or break contact via the door rod attached to them to be able to lock or unlock via the locks mechanisum . It also shows the internal locking switch which while your sat in the car will lock and unlock all six switchs(doors) including the deisel door flap (which proves the locking mechanisums and wiring to all locks work) when you incert the key out side the car it will unlock all the doors +deisel door flap but when you turn the key to the right to lock all doors it with not lock anything at all , hence why i first posted this problem .

As i have said i have won another plip and sensor on ebay last night i'll get them fitted first and then see to the driver door lock after i need the security on the vehicle sorted priority.

After so many post and trying this & that plus all sort of thing , I think the passenger door lock that seem to be solid isnt solid at all proberly the driver door lock and ignition barrel has been change sometime in the past the key i'm trying to unlock the passenger door lock isnt meant for that lock at all. In the eighteen months or so that it was laid up the sensor has lost it memory. Now the locks that where proberly change the driver door lock has some sort of problem so i proberly will have to change all lock to get all lock locking how they should really be working. any thought would be appreciated . kind regards martin

Up in the ceiling near the front windscreen you'll see a plastic unit which houses the interior light etc. Close to that you'll see somewhere a rectangular piece of very dark purple plastic, approx 1.5" x 0.5".
Behind this is the infra-red receiver for the key plip.
Because they're up in the roof area, the connectors have a habit of corroding, from the damp and condensation.
Have a look there, checking all the electrical connectors and give the little IR receivers at the front of the circuit board a wipe too, as they can get dirty.
