Grand Scenic II Intermittent Electronic Handbrake Operation

Today when attempting to pull off from a cold start the electronic handbrake would not disengage. I tried it several times, tried engine off, then on, trying it manually, then by trying to pull off etc. Nothing would work.

I left it an hour then pumped the brakes before I switched the engine on again, (don't know if this actually affected it or not but worth noting), and this time I could manually release the electronic handbrake. Tried again a few minutes later and it wouldn't work again.

It seems intermittent. Reading through the forums and other issues on this, there doesn't appear to be any similar cases where it's intermittent like this.

Some clues: We had all the brake shoes replaced in February, and an MOT done shortly afterwards so all is OK there. However, my Wife has said the brakes do feel a bit "spongier" than before, but if she pumps the brake pedal all is good again. There is no loss of brake fluid as I just checked.
Car is a 2007 model, (07), with 42000 on the clock, not had a battery change if this could be a likely cause.

Can't get it into local garage for a few days, so if any of you have any ideas or suggestions I'm willing to try anything.

Edit: There are no warnings or errors showing on the dash at all.
