That's quite consistent with an act of vandalism.

What happens is that the vandal sweeps his/her hand in an arc, thereby creating an entry-point, which gets progressively deeper, then begins to taper-off as the object used lifts out the scratch.

I'd also contact a few independents in your area, as they will have a lower cost-base due to only working for themselves, rather than having to pay a percentage to the franchising company.
