There are two aspects to a clutch; the part that pushes the plates apart and the plates themselves.
If it was the part that pushes the plates apart that is giving rise to a fault, then yes - gears would be extremely difficult to engage/disengage.
But the plates are the parts that are intended to wear, and what happens when they reach the end of their service life is not make such good contact with each other, and slippage occurs.
Perversely, in extreme circumstances (i.e. the plates not touching at all), the gears can be selected without using the clutch pedal at all.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
