Brake service light only when brake applied

Hi all new to the forum so be gentle...
I have just bought a 2005 Grand Scenic 1.9dti Privilege the "Service" light and the "P" in a triangle comes on but only when the brake is applied. It doesn't do it at all when released and sometimes not when it's applied. The parking brake actually works perfect though, The battery was flat when I picked the car up could this have any Bearing on it? Does the parking brake actually need a service? Any help would be great. Do88y
