Laguna radio interference and reception

I've just become a member and was hoping to get a bit of advice.

I've have a Laguna 2.0 RTI (1999) which is fine apart from the radio. There are two issues.
Firstly the reception on FM is pretty poor, I can't keep a signal even on national stations even when just driving locally (which my daughter's transistor radio has no problem with). Is there any way I boost reception, or at least check the aerial (rear windscreen?) is properly connected.

The second problem is the interference I get on AM. There is a loud ticking which rises with the engine speed. I guess this is the alternator, but how can I suppress it.

The radio is the standard one supplied with this model. I've had the problems since I've had the car, 2 years, but they are just about driving me mad now.

I wondered if these were common problems and if there was anything I could try myself before having to take it to a car audio specialist. Any ideas would be appreciated.

P.S. The CD player works fine.
