My '93 Astra has lived outside all its life and is only know starting to corrode on the back corner of one sill and one inner wheel arch. My previous cars use to rust in front of my eyes though (especially the ford sierra and fiat strada).

I wouldn't use old engine oil as an underseal as it will be contaminated with acids etc from the engine combustion processes which may actually cause corrosion Best to use a propriety brand of underseal...anything less would be a bodge
