I think you have it about right. If it's anything like the handsfree on the Laguna, then it's the warning to tell you that the keycard is still inside the car.
In theory, it warns you that the card has dropped out of your pocket, that the car won't lock when you walk away, and that anyone will be able to get in and drive away.
In practice, because it beeps every time you get out of the car, you soon stop consciously noticing whether the beeps are there or not. For this reason, always make sure that the car locks (flashes lights and sounds horn) when you walk away. My car has failed to lock on numerous occasions - occasionally it has been because I've dropped the card in the car, but more often because the missus has left her handbag in there, and her card is inside it.
