Overheating brakes

I was driving through a mountain with a fully loaded car(5 persons+baggages) and after a ~1 hour ride the brakes had overheated to a point where they had severely degrated performance(I had had to stomp really hard on the pedal to make it stop).

The problem is, i really dont think i was driving them that hard. I was using engine braking as much as i could(2nd or 3rd gear all the time).
Now i am thinking of servicing the brake system by myself(changing the brake fluid, and brake pads) Is it a good idea to do it myself?Any advice? How can i minimize the problem?
