When was the trip computer last reset? After reseting the computer the ave average mpg reading is not very accurate for the first 50 miles at least.
The average mpg becomes more accurate the more miles you drive. Give it 200 miles or so and you should get a better idea of ave mpg. Also make sure you are not looking at instantaneous mpg as this varies greatly & every time you accelerate mpg plummets.
