I understand your statement "Undo the nut completely then replace it loosely on the spindle and give it a swift tap with a hammer. If it falls out, which they sometimes do you won't even need a splitter."
However, I am confused by what you are saying here "Don't loosen the nut and try to tap it as if it will loosens the joint you won't be able to remove the nut due to the whole thing turning. Take it fully off while the joint is tight then replace it hand tight."
Am I correct I just remove the nut completely, screw it back on a couple of turns, tap it with a hammer, and the joint will hopefully pop out.
