Hallelieuia! I found out what the intermittent alarm was.
The bonnet (hood) sensor switch wire had come adrift as the bottom of the switch had broken. The contact is also very corroded and was occasionally making/breaking contact, hence the intermittant nature of the problem.
Easy to fix and, meantime, wire is currently neatly tucked out of harms way.
My other cars are less unusual!
