Renault Espace - Bodywork - Self-levelling Xenon lights - Problems with actuators ?

Latest in my joys of Renault ownership :steam:

My Espace IV has Xenon lights but the self levelling seems to have stopped working. I realised I could hardly see where I was going, where the lights used to be brilliant. I can currently drive on full beam without annoying people ! Then realised that the beams seemed to end very close to the car.

The headlights usually flick up and then down again when I turn them on, but they've stopped doing this so I suspect the levelling system is stuck on it's lowest setting.

Is this a known problem on Renault Xenons ? What's the likely fix - my dealer's unlikely to know !

I may have a similar problem:

I understand Xenon lights on my Espace are self-adjusting. That should mean they adjust themselves (beam angle) according to how much load
I put in the trunk. Well, sometimes after a longer drive, they tend to turn too low so that the light beam is just a few meters in front of the car.
Stopping and switching the car off and on resets the lights correctly. Is this a bug or a feature?

Regards,
Espacer

There is a front and rear actuator on the Espace which may just be stuck ( read - clean them and lub them )

Failing that you'll have to get Renault to take a look unless anyone else has experienced this failure ??

Note that the UCH unit ( Car's brain ) is the same for Laguna, Espace + other models but the self levelling parameters MUST be set by Renault to avoid damage to the actuators..

Hi
My lights seem to be too high and I cannot see how to adjust them so if you find out anything useful I would appreciate some advise. Also I need to know if the yellow CO" light (bottom right of intrument panel) comes on for 3 secs when your ignition is turned on?
If you can help it would be greatly appreciated thank you

Barry,
Not been able to adjust them on my car, sometimes other drivers seem to think they are too high and flash me, but I think thats becuase the lights are brighter than normal.

The orange light does not come on as per your model (mines an 05 plate 2.2dci with 34k on it)

hi i drive a grand espace 2.2dci manual year 2005
until recently when i turned the headlights on i could hear a motor noise and the headlight bulbs would move up and down then settle in one place.
this all of a sudden stopped happening and i went to my local renault garage and told the my headlights were no longer auto adjusting, they kept the car and at first told me a wire was broken somwhere and had to be located and fixed. after the diagnostic they said it will cost £91.
next day i was told it was a software issue and they have reset the software and it works fine. they charged me £122. it said on the reciept they had checked the sensors and plugs for water damage and all was ok.
got to the car and the problem was still there, they said the lights were adjusting i said i cant hear the motor, then they said thats a seperat issue.
so my original problem is still there they have fixed something i didnt ask them too and they want to charge me again for any additional work.
Please can you suggest how i should go about this?? thank you

sounds like the ballast units are gone, they do not last forever, Valeo originals are the only solution dont do they 10 pound ebay from China route, replacements are £125.00 inc vat each, dealers will charge over £200 for each ballast kit and will need to be fitted also your looking at £500 all in from the dealers, buy from South West Lights and lok around on the internet for fitting instructions its quite simple.

Right here we go; Ranault garage have confirmed that the headlight motors are at fault and will need replacing, total cost £535 including £200 of diagnostics.
Renault UK have kindley agreed to help out and i only have to pay £167
Iam more than happy with the way Renault UK have resolved the issue, so all credit to Rob and Hazel from Renault UK complaints department. Only down side is the garage have had my car for 5 days.

Hi All,

I have just bought a 2003 2,2dci Grand Espace Auto, unfortunately I didnt realise it had Xenon self leveling lights that dont self level......grrrr

My first post and I am already asking questions....LOL

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to where the sensors are on the front and rear suspension and maybe a general check list so I can get a head start on fault finding.

Other than the lights I love the car, just done 600 miles straight and didnt miss a beat !!!

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Davesss,

Thanks, I will read the post, I think I have found the cause of my fault, the rod connecting the front wishbone to actuator is missing. By moving actuator arm I can adjust the lights height. Ha vent managed to check the rear yet but will do tomorrow.

Does anyone have a part number for the rod connecting the actuator to wishbone.

Cheers,
Neil
