It sounds like the computer in the dash has either crashed or completely failed. I'm not sure if it'll help, but have you tried running the instrument diagnostic? From memory, it works like this:
1) Insert the key but don't turn it
2) Press and hold the trip computer button on the end of the wiper stalk.
3) Turn the key to the first position
4) Release the trip computer button.
If the instruments are working correctly, the dials should all now step up and down across their entire ranges. If the trip display is working, pressing the button on the end of the wiper stalk should cycle through various displays. Pressing the mileage reset button should exit diagnostic mode - I think it also clears certain error conditions, which may be enough to fix the problem if you're lucky.
Another thing that might be worth a try would be leaving the positive connector for the battery disconnected overnight. Make sure you know the code for your radio (and how to enter it) before you do this.
