Yes the nut can be very tight - it's supposed to be.
It is not impossible to remove the nut it's just you'll need better quality tools for the job not only for removal but also for torquing the new nut which is necessary. The nut is a use once only fitting and a new nut should only be used when all is made satisfactory inside the drums.
Most decent garages use three-quarter inch drive sockets with long bar levers or an air gun.
