I think the reason for that is so you could then operate the system using the passengers door keyhole ?
Replace the batteries in the plip. Use the other key.
Check their is no obstructions / corrosion at the lock points.
Check their is no water ingress at the int light facia above the rear view mirror. Small flat blade screwdriver to prise the cover off. Allegedly where the reciever is. You can see a black bulb piece on the outside.
There was a thread here telling how you can reset the key.
The dealer will recode the key in five mins but the cost ?
1 hrs labour ?
