When you lock the doors via the switch inside the car (I'm assuming there is one in your model Espace...), does the driver door lock then?
If not (as I'm expecting), you can be pretty sure it's not a plip problem, and more and electrical fault with the lock solenoid.
Take the door card off and have a look in the area of the lock mechanism. Check the wires that connect to the solenoid and if you have one, connect a multimeter to the terminals, noting the voltage when you lock/unlock the car.
My guess is a loose or corroded connection there or a break where the wires pass thru the door and into the car body.
