Iain, I couldn't have put it better myself.

Manufacturers are under no obligation to do ANYTHING once the warranty has expired.

Starting legal action will also mean that the goodwill gesture is withdrawn completely as it will become an entrenched 'them & us' confrontation.

And the van will sit in the garage, with the OP liable for storage costs in the meantime.
