c. Testing on a level surface.
At halfway on the dipstick the oil test shows 5/6.
At 3/4 full on the dipstick it shows 6/6.

Different car different engine I know , but still no harm to check again.
When did the oil light come on btw? was it at cold start or hot idling in traffic or maybe going round a corner?. Servicing history all good n up to date?
Hm... weird, I'd estimate mine was at least 3/4 on the dipstick while reading 3/6 on the dash. (Also on level surface).

I checked the dip while the engine was cold - had probably run maybe 30-60 mins earlier. The warning on the dash came on after the wife had been sat in the car playing with all the buttons for a while, so just sat still, cold, on start, but battery had been in use for a bit (not that that'd make any difference, I'm sure).

Service history all good - and most recently serviced a month or two ago.

Thanks for your input. I'll check it again when I get a chance.
