Dear Friends!
After many hours trying to solve this nagging issue amongst fellow Scenic owners,I finally have a solution that guarantees you can once again drive your wonderful french creation!
Follow the steps carefully and you will be back on the road in no time. Here we go........
Firstly open your key fob with a tiny screwdriver and by the battery you will see two lines of letters and numbers.Make a note of the bottom row only.Usually 5-6 letters/numbers.
Next log onto this web site:BBA reman. ABS, ecu's, throttle bodies, air mass meters, and catalytic converters (http://www.bba-reman.com).
You will see underlined the title Download.Click on it and follow the instructions.Hopefully you will have Extract Now or Winrar installed.Unzip the file and save it in My Documents.
Go to My Documents and there will be a box with a blue line at the top amongst your other docs, with renault on it.
Open that file and at the top it will say password.Your screen should be green. The password is Trantir.Enter the password.
It will then ask for your model.Simply type in Megane Scenic. It will then ask you for your code from your key fob.
Enter the digits/letters from the fob and it will then generate your emergency immobiliser code. Please write it down and keep it safe!
Now go to the car and put your key in the ignition.Turn it so the immobiliser light flashes rapidly.Press the central locking button on the dash next to the hazzard button, hold it to the left.Keep an eye on the flashing light. When you press and hold the central locker, the light will slow down.BEFORE YOU EVEN PRESS THE CL MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CODE IN FRONT OF YOU,TIMING IS VITAL.
Now,once you press and hold the CL count the flashes in sequence to your first digit.ie if your first digit is 5,then count 5 flashes and then release the CL button.Immediately press the CL in again and count the flashes for your next digit.Repeat for 3 and 4.Make sure you count exactly otherwise you will have to start all over again. When you have completed all 4 digits, the immobiliser light will remain constant.
Now you can start your car!!!!!!
You will have to do this sequence everytime you turn the car off,but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than taking your car into a dealer and paying out hundreds of pounds.Plus the fact nobody can steal it cause they don't know your code!!

Having just the one key, I thought I'd get this ready just in case. I did everything here (and it happened just as described) until the last bit. The red light kept flashing and a 'square lightning' icon flashed also. No start!
The only thing I can see untoward is the fact that the letters/numbers in the fob are imprinted on the case and not on the printed circuit, making me think that the case might have been changed.
Any ideas?

thanks all (esp blue eyes) for helping me resolve this immobiliser not turning off issue.obtaining and entering the code via the dash button helped get my dads scenic mobile again. rather than spend big money getting the system fixed via the dealer. as suggested by another of your members i have just bought and fitted a permanent immobiliser over ride from remote key ltd. was easy to fit, just attached 3 wires to the back of the fuse box and now it starts/runs as if the immobiliser was never there. it cost £100 and came ready programmed with the right code. top advice guys! thanks again and happy motoring
Andy.

Nice one blue eyes  I have just taken delivery of a '98 Scenic yesterday for the softness to drive around in, and her getting stuck on the road worried the cr*p outta me.
I have given her dual instruction on how it works, and she can now overide it flawlessly.

Hi all.

Yet another case of the flashing immobiliser.

I have read numerous posts and done numerous searches but am still none the wiser. I am trying to obtain the emergency code and have tried on numerous occasions using the downloaded renault key / immobiliser test kit, but to am now at my wits end.

Both the spare and existing ir key fob have one lithium battery in them. There are 5 digits on each with 2 at the top and 3 below, however the bottom 3 digits are different on each.

I've tried entering just the bottom 3 digits but get the following message, "NOT ENOUGH CHARACTERS", then tried entering all 5 digits on both, but keep getting the message, "INCORRECT CHARACTER IN CODE".

I'm hoping it's something pretty obvious that i'm doing wrong. Any assistant would be most appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hi there

I've followed these instructions for my 98 Megane Scenic but the flashing light will not slow down to enable me to enter code. Maybe I'm just not quick enough to enter the code?!

The keys are radio type not infra red....

the rf keys dont work with this method its only for ir remotes but i stand corrected but to enter code you have to put key in ignition

ooops i meant the ir plip keys dont know abour rf but would have thought only same principle

Bob925
20th January 2008, 11:22 PM
The two systems work differently.

The IR plip keys disable the immobiliser by pressing the button on the key - the doors unlock and the car is "un-immobilised". The immobiliser activates after a certain period of the igniton/engine being switched off, or the doors being locked.

The RF plips work with the key in the ignition, unlocking the doors does not de-activate the immobiliser. The immobiliser will activate as soon as the key is removed.

I suspect that it's not possible to use a secondhand key with at the very least going to the dealer, or use someone with the proper diagnostic/programming kit.

The rubber cover over the button on my key has worn. So I've just bought a key from eBay for a fiver. Not for the electronics, as I expect that won't work, but just for the plastic case. BUt I will give it a go with trying to program it to work with my car. I'll report the findings when I try it.

well i think it's the immobiliser.
The car won't start but it will turn over the immobiliser light stayed illuminated
I was told to try a little trick - disconnec the earth lead for five mins put key in the ignition reconnect earth strap wait another five mins and start this should work they said

I tried it and it worked but the immobiliser light stays illuminated and when I turn the engine off it's back to square one same as above and every time I do the little trick it seems to work but only the once I cant' be doing this every time I need to go to and from work

Hi All,

This is my first post. I felt I had to as, following the advice posted in this thread, I was able to reprogramme my 1998 Renault Scenic Megane 1.6 Auto remote key fob. Eventually it was easy, but tracking down all the relevant info (yesterday afternoon 9/2/08) was a bit time consuming and then it was a process of trial and error until it all clicked and my car is now working (fingers crossed it stays so!!) Many thanks to Blue eyes for starting it off and madnoel10 for the link. I thought that as the original thread is a bit old that even now, a year and a half later, it is still valid (I've just popped out and tried it again - still working;)

New Member here:o

Hoping to get some info on sorting out my sons '99 Scenic

He's got the dreaded imobiliser problem, but I can't get the zip file referred to here to open. Is it still available?

I think the problem started with water getting into the unit above the windscreen. He has the model with 2 sunroofs, (big mistake:crazy: )

However, by the look of the knowledge on here I'm sure we'll get it going again

And do we have any Glasgow owners who have had this problem with a Scenic?

Hi,

I have a Megane 1 1.6 RTe and one plip that works and one that doesn't (took batteries out of both to check if they needed replacing - they didn't)...

I have the code for my car using the immobiliser program and that works - ie the car can be started with the 'bad' key.

Have checked the output of both keys on a camera and they both light.. have checked the output to the led also with a scope and they both output what looks like 'the same' signal...

I have entered the immobiliser code and then plipped away at the sensor with the bad key to no avail...

After trying this many times I guess that desync isn't likely to be the problem?

In summary - I put the immobiliser code in (it works - actually tried the wrong one to check and that lit up the 'coil' symbol on the dash and flashed the red light rapidly indicating it was wrong) and then once the red light comes on (for ~10 seconds) I plip with the bad key - no reaction to it at all.

Good key still works thankfully though :-)

Would there be any mileage in disconnecting the car battery - could that help resync things?

I have read it can take like a dozen times for this to work.. any reason why this would be (think I've tried about 20x now).

Any help is much appreciated whilst I still have hair...

Kev

I tried the disconnecting the battery trick + pulling the fuse for the central locking, both mention as having worked for others on here. It didn't work for me. I'm sure the problem I have is the cl unit in the roof.
Now i have a runner on the code, I'm going to get the immobiliser by pass fitted.

I got passed my immobiliser no problem with the instructions but couldn't get my key to resync whatever I tried until I got told to try this...

After step 4 I had to start the car for a few secs,
Switch it off,
Press and hold the c/l button until the doors locked & unlocked
Then I had to press the c/l button again until the doors locked & unlocked, keep it pressed and then press my plip on my key a few times.

I was so happy when it worked :)

Today I've fitted the immobliser by pass from this company and it worked 1st time too:d Good company to deal with, but their phone is very busy!

It's next to How does it work?
The application that is available for download here will enable you to find out what the immobiliser bypass code is for your car.

But here's a direct link to the tool.

Ok finally got the Espace running. Without recoding the immobiliser.

Just to recap.

Battery went dead after leaving the car standing for a couple of weeks.

Tried a jump start but the immobiliser won't switch off. The key was switching off the alarm and working the central locking ok. But not the immobiliser.

Tried finding codes to bypass the immobilser using the downloadable program but couldn't get the codes generated.

Put the key back together after looking for info inside it and tried it one last time. Started first turn.

There's no reason for why that should cause an MOT failure as far as I know, but whether you'd be able to explain to a tester how to start the car and whether they'd be willing to do it is another question altogether!

madnoel10
28th March 2008, 02:52 PM
My local government controlled MOT testing station will accept a renault for test under these circumstances:)

Azurael

The other benefit of Local Authority MOT stations is that they won't try and convince you to have loads of work done which your car doesn't need!

My old Golf Mk1 passed an MOT with a seriosuly holey radiator a few years back, it was filling the test stations pit as he did the test.

Then me and the Mrs went on holiday in it the same day - drove 500-odd miles over a fortnight. Had to take loads of water with us!

No, I don't think the key will make a blind bit of difference :)

AND if your key was not buggered after you enter the said code you could also hold down your central locking button until the central locking locked then unlocked and you press the key fob 3 times until it operated your central locking remotely your key would be fixed. IF it didn't then your key is knackered and you need a new one, which it would anyway..................

Ive had the immobiliser problem and am starting car entering code as the resync method doesnt work , but im wondering because if u leave the ignition in auxilary position i dont have to enter code to start, so im thinking of going to ignition switch and puting permenant live to ignition live (without removing keys) and seeing if this will prevent code entering, i know my clock will stay on but hope that wont be a problem ..anyone any thoughts ?

Hello! Just experienced the problem with immobiliser. I have rang Renault dealer in London (Ilford) and they have told me that it will cost £78.00 +Vat just for testing. And then extra charge for labour and the parts. I beleve that might go up to 150 quit which is unfair play from them.

Here is the numbers from my hob, hopefully with your help i will be able to start the car:

CR1620 sounds suspiciously like CR2016 which is the battery type!
The number you need is often printed on the board with an inkjet printer in dot matrix type, it is sometimes a bit faint, use a good magnifier.
IIRC you need the five digits immediately before the "-".

Hi. This is my first posting, as my good lady is stranded 30 miles from home with a non-starting Scenic. It has played up several times before, with going away for 10 minutes or half an hour, coming back and it would start.

This time however no joy, so while she waited for the roadside assistance to arrive I researched and came across your wonderful forums and also http://renaulthelp.110mb.com/ . Having downloaded the windows app, I asked her for the "car type", but she could only come up with a 5 digit code. So in desperation and to pass time I got her to switch the car on, hold the Central Locking button and wait for the immobiliser light to do something. It did nothing, but there was a loud beep. She switched off and tried starting the car and it started first time!

Of course this could just be coincidence, or does this make any sense to anyone, please?

Happy motoring. J & P

Hi folks,

Just a wee note on the starting woes of a 2001 2.0L petrol Scenic that I have owned from nearly new.
It started fine until about 1yr ago when it failed to start when warm but would turn over easily. This happened twice in 8mnths but would start after 30mins or so. It wasn't a key fault.
In the last month it has done three times, once overnight, and began to take a bit longer to start.
Following the excellent advice here I took off the TDC sensor, cleaned it and now starts almost before the key turns! The sensor was coloured but didn't have any bits of metal attached.

On a different tack how much should I pay for a local garage to do the timing belt?

Cheers
Pat

Great info, managed to get the car started, although on my PC I couldn't get the code program to work (It just quickly opened and closed), but it worked ok on the kids one.
Found out how to get the receiver out of the headlining (Pu¤¤¤¤ towards the window and down) from here. Everything looked ok, so then found out from here how to check the IR transmitter on the key (Point it at a mobile camera and see if it flashes blue). It didn't opened it up and saw that the transmitter light had seperated from the board, out with the soldering iron, remved the old solder, reinserted the now shorter wires in the board, resoldered.
Entered the code again, then used the resync trick.
Now all working ok!!!

Found the solution to all my plip woes(!)

Drove my 10 year-old Megane 1 back from Nottingham..
Oil starvation to camshaft (unknown reason) - went blue..
Cambelt snapped..
Valve(s) hit pistons - suddenly my plip problem is history :(

I think I'd gone 'too long' between oil changes and a 4 hour journey was too much for the old thing.

Morale: Old car = Frequent oil+filter changes..
Of course it could have been caused by something else I guess....

Shame it was a great car - only job I ever had to do (in the 7 years I had it) was replace a few coils and clean the idle-control-valve (oh and take too long replacing plip batteries!).

Just bought another Renault (Scenic 2) - nice car - sure I'll have a completely different set of issues with this one... key-less ignition... <gulp>

Poole in Dorset..
It was an R-Reg 1.6 RTe; with 10 months MOT on it.
The car is still at a local garage - I periodically drive past and see it has moved; wrote off the bill from the garage (85 quid) by letting him have it - local breakers would only have given me 90 for it anyway; seems sacrilege considering the condition of the rest of the car and the sum of all the parts; I stripped it of the tax, roof bars, etc.
He said he's gonna source a second-hand engine and put it in; we only run one car and wouldn't have had the time to go through the process ourselves :(
May pop in and see how he's getting on - a good project for someone with the time and means to get a new engine in it; unfortunately those times have gone for me.

Bought another Renault so I wouldn't have to sign up to a different forum :)

You will have to do this sequence everytime you turn the car off,but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than taking your car into a dealer and paying out hundreds of pounds.Plus the fact nobody can steal it cause they don't know your code!!
just the job blue eyes works a treat

dont suppose its a flat battery in the key is it, you could try changing the battery from the other key and see if it works, i have 2 key both with batteries, both emit a red infrared light, but only one key works the imobiliser for reasons i dont know, except its a good place for a spare battery,

After reading through this (and many other) thread I now understand that the reman download will only generate the code for IR keys.

I have a Scenic 1 Phase 2 1.6RT (yr 2000) with RF key.

I have a second key (blade only, no plipper) and asked Renault to supply the 4-digit code to deactivate the imobiliser via the Central Locking button. The guy at Renault checked on his computer & said he only had an 8-digit code listed. Is this right?

Can I still use the central locking button method with this 8-digit code? The guy wants £20+VAT to give me the code, but if it's not going to work I won't bother!
